Understanding Self-Care

Self-care is often misconstrued as a luxury, but it's essential to your health and to being the best mom you can be. It's not just about bubble baths and chocolates—it's about finding what replenishes your energy and allows you to give the best of yourself to your family. Take those few minutes of extra time to ponder and discover what works best for you. Then make that a non-optional part of your daily or weekly routine. Here are some self-care points to make sure you're hitting.

  • Physical Wellness:

Regular exercise, nutritious eating, and adequate sleep are fundamental to self-care. I know new motherhood or having multiples can make exercise seem impossible. Be vocal with someone you trust to watch your little(s) so you can get your activity in. If that's not an option, try stretching a few times throughout the day WITH your child(ren). It's not about perfection or all or nothing, it's about doing what you can.
For nutrition, be sure to take your vitamins, especially vitamin D which can positively impact your mood. Frozen veggies are easy, throw some into every meal.
  • Emotional Health:

Make time for activities that nourish your emotional wellbeing, such as journaling, connecting with friends, or seeking professional support if needed. Even if it's hard to go, if it's been a while since you've done any of these for your emotional health, you have to just start doing it. For it into your days somehow, you have to make the room for it. You do have time for these things, that time is just being filled with something else right now, likely something that could wait one hour, like cleaning or laundry.
  • Spiritual Connection:

Whether it's through meditation, prayer, or spending time in nature, connecting with your spiritual side can offer peace and perspective. Involve your child(ren) with your habits and it makes self-care so much richer!

Embracing Mindfulness

Mindfulness is more than a practice—it's a way of life. By being present in the moment, you can reduce stress and enjoy life's simple pleasures. When the next to-do thing pops into your head, consider leaving it for a bit longer. Consider prioritizing the things of today and leaving tomorrow for tomorrow.
When you have the extra energy & motivation, set up some things for the future so you don't have to do it tomorrow! To be honest, start doing what you WANT to do and not always what you HAVE to do. I think this is husband's secret to peace and I'm stealing it for myself too!
Here's how to incorporate mindfulness into your daily routine:

  • I'm Begin your day with intention by taking some seconds or minutes upon waking to breathe deeply and set a positive tone for the day.
  • Practice gratitude by reflecting on things you're grateful for throughout the day, this can shift your focus from the day's stresses to its blessings.

Creating a Self-Care Routine

Establishing a self-care routine may seem daunting, but with small, actionable steps, it's within reach. Start by identifying pockets of time that can be dedicated to your wellbeing, such as during your child's naptime or after bedtime. Remember, consistency is key. Even ten minutes a day can make a significant difference over time.
